One of the great errors of our day is that many people build their doctrine on their human experiences and then chase through the Scripture to find verses that support what they've experienced and developed it into a doctrine.
What we want to do is to develop what we believe right straight out of the recorded Word of God. The most significant thing that happened at Pentecost was not tongues. There are many people who use the term, ''I am a Pentecostal'' -- to refer to the fact that - ''I speak in tongues.'' If there is anything that we ought to note about Pentecost -- it is that three thousand people were saved on the Day of Pentecost
I don't know of any subject that has caused believers to be interested as it pertains to the subject of tongues. There is interest in it. There is confusion about it. There are those who dogmatically say, ''No - that is totally nonsense and not relevant for today.'' There are others that say, ''If you are genuinely saved, you may not have the Holy Spirit yet, but you can get the Holy Spirit, and if you do, the evidence of your receiving the Holy Spirit is that you will, beyond any shadow of a doubt, speak in tongues.''
Somewhere between those two statements -- when two people engage in a conversation about tongues wit differing opinions -- they end the conversation with no one changed about their position. The tragedy is that they spent time talking about an issue that cannot be settled when they could have been talking about the efforts that need to be made winning the lost to Christ.
The issue of tongues was not the main thing at Pentecost, but it is an issue and we need to deal with it. There is a great deal of truth and there is a great deal of heresy which is preached ad there is a great deal of confusion because people have a tendency to take one part of the Bible and another part of the Bible -- mix it like stew -- and use something ove ...
