I. Examine the Record
Acts. 2:1-4

It is important to look at the account of Pentecost from the Bible to get a true picture of how tongues came to play a part in the Pentecostal experience.

The Bible is clear in the first four verses of Acts 2.

1. The Setting
The Feast of Weeks represented the gathering of all kinds of people from all over the world.

2. The Coming
There was a noise like the sound of a might wind.

3. The Filling
They were all filled with the Holy Spirit.

4. The Speaking
They began speaking as the Spirit gave them enablement and they all heard in their own language.

II. Examine the Response

How did the people of Jerusalem respond to the coming of the Holy Spirit?

1. They were Confounded
v. 12 - ''And they were all amazed, and were in doubt, saying one to another, What meaneth this?''

2. They were Curious
v. 8 - ''And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?''

3. They were Critical
v. 13 - ''Others mocking said These men are full of new wine.''

There are always people who will attempt to explain the acts of God in terms of the natural. They will always look for an excuse.

''This is why they got well.''
''This is why that church is growing.''
''This is why he gave his heart to Jesus.''

There are always people who will try to explain the miraculous with natural reasoning.

We ought to live our lives, by the power of the Holy Spirit, that will cause people to say - ''There's no reason for those people to do what they are doing.''

Why does God, seemingly, bless come churches and others seem to be dying?
Because anything that you do in your own strength can be reasonably explained by man.
But when you allow God to do something that the world cannot explain -- that will get the attention of the people who are dumbfounded because they can't explain it.
