I Thessalonians 4
I THES. 4:11 ''Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life.''
What does that mean? Let's break it down.
I. A QUIET MAN LOVES HIS WIFE
I Thes.4:4 ''Each of you should learn to live with his own wife in a way that is holy and honorable.''
Probably, the first thing that comes to your mind when you think of this brother is his wife. It's like Priscilla and Aquila in the book of Acts - you just don't think about one without the other. They're like peanut butter and jelly - they just go together. The brother and his wife were married for 31 years and loved each other deeply. He grew up in MA but when her family moved to Florida he followed. Her devotion to his care in his long battle with cancer is a reflection of that love. She never wavered. Had their roles been reversed he would have done likewise. This quality of love, faithfulness, holiness and honor in marriage is no small feat. The Bible teaches that marriage is not just physical, it is spiritual. Marriage, in some mysterious way, is a representation of Christ's relationship with his church. This brother, a quiet man, got this right.
II. A QUIET MAN MINDS HIS OWN BUSINESS
I Thes.4:11 ''Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life: You should mind your own business.''
Did you know that the Bible says to ''mind your own business?'' Minding your own business has a passive side and an active side. On the passive side it means a person who doesn't ''stir the pot.'' A person who is not a trouble-maker. Just think about how many quarrels, disputes, arguments, and problems could be prevented if people would mind their own business! This brother has been worshiping with us here for seven years and in that time I can tell you he has never caused a problem. He minded his own business. He never stirred the pot. Whenever I saw him approaching I never thought, ''Here comes trouble.'' On the active side ''minding your own business'' ...
