Intro:

Welcome to week 5 of a multi-month study of 1st Corinthians. Might be worth a short reminder of why we would like to teach this way. Gets us deep into a text and allows us to wrestle with it in its context. Gets you guys an opportunity to immerse yourself in a text and to get familiar with it. Keeps us from simply preaching hobby horses or favorite topics and makes sure that we have to deal with even difficult texts that we would be tempted to avoid.
Shows that we value the Word and, all of the Word as our ultimate authority.

So, with all that said, let's jump in to 1 Corinthians 2:6-16. Where we left off last week was with Paul rebuking the Corinthians about some divisions that had sprung up amongst them, and with him touching on the fact that at the root of those divisions was pride, and pride is the enemy of a true understanding of the gospel. One of the things the Corinthians were taking pride in and acting divided over was wisdom. Who knew the most? Who had the most impressive knowledge?

We wrestle with some of the same stuff today. How many of us feel like in order to follow Jesus we have to be a bit of a dumb-dumb? Isn't that the narrative? ''All the smart people have given up on this thing and the only people left following Jesus are people who haven't really properly thought it through.''

I mean think about it, if you follow Jesus well, people will think that it isn't wise. You will humble yourself when others exalt themselves, you will seek forgiveness when others seek revenge, you will give away stuff when others are trying to collect stuff, you will live for an unseen future while others want to pile it all in now. You will deny yourself experiences in order to live a holy life while others will do all they can to experience every single thing there is on ...
