Happy Mother's Day. We are so thankful for the work that moms do in society. The sacrifices made; the thousands of ways that self-interest is denied for the good of their kids. Thanks moms.
In some ways it is what the text will speak to us about today.
1 Corinthians 9:19 is where we will be. We are in week 14 of Messy Grace, a study in 1st Corinthians.
Paul had been addressing a young church in Corinth about the massive gaps between what they believed and how they behaved.
We all live with gaps to be honest. For some of us, they will be wide, and for others less so, but there isn't really anyone who always and only lives out the fullness of what they believe.
Paul had been asking the Corinthian church to sacrifice some of their lives for the good of others, and he is going to extend the theme in the text today.
So, let's read the entire text and then we will come back and make some observations. We need to do some broader legwork today from the rest of Scripture, so work with me as I go.
Passage and Main Points:
19 For though I am free from all, I have made myself a servant to all, that I might win more of them. 20 To the Jews I became as a Jew, in order to win Jews. To those under the law I became as one under the law (though not being myself under the law) that I might win those under the law. 21 To those outside the law I became as one outside the law (not being outside the law of God but under the law of Christ) that I might win those outside the law. 22 To the weak I became weak, that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all people, that by all means I might save some. 23 I do it all for the sake of the gospel, that I may share with them in its blessings.
