We are in 1 Corinthians 10 and this morning we will go from verse 23, and there is a chance that the text will irritate you this week. That's okay, and to be fair it is nothing compared to what is coming next week.
Where we left the text last week, Paul was calling the Corinthians to a unity or a singularity between their religious experiences and the rest of their lives.
He spoke about communion, and reminded them that if they participate with Christ in communion, then they shouldn't leave that moment and participate with demons elsewhere. In addition, if they participated with Christ together with other people, then they better change the way they treat other people as a result.
This week he is going to conclude that discussion before he begins to tackle some really practical things for the church and the way that it should gather and function.
So please join me in 1 Corinthians 10:23. Remember that the church in Corinth had written to Paul, asking him a number of questions on Christian conduct, including whether they could continue to enjoy some of the benefits of their previous temple worship, which included having access to the only real source of affordable and high-quality meat; meat that was sacrificed in the temple to idols.
Now why might this irritate you? Because it is going to require thoughtfulness and prayerfulness and a willingness to dwell in tension in how we apply it.
We love black and white. Yes and no. Christian and non-Christian. And Paul is going to call the Corinthians and us to something better than that. Genuine freedom.
