We have spent most of the year in 1 Corinthians and are spending 5 weeks in chapters 12-14.I hope and pray that it has been useful to you in some way, shape or form. As always, we would love to hear from you to find out what God has been teaching you.
Today, we will be in chapter 14, where Paul discusses tongues, prophecy and women in public gatherings. So, nothing controversial there at all. I am going to ask us to remember that Paul is living in and writing to a context. That is essential, and we must remember that. By the power of the Holy Spirit, his words continue to be authoritative and helpful for us today, but, in order for us to know what they mean for us today, we must first establish what they meant to the original hearers. A great grid for us for biblical understanding is that it cannot mean what it never meant.
So, let us, before we read the text, which will be lengthy, remind ourselves why Paul is writing this stuff to the church in Corinth in the first place.
Paul planted this church but hasn't seen them in a while. He tells them right from the get go that giftedness isn't their issue - maturity is. In chapter 1 he affirms that they don't lack any gift, but he then spends the next 13 chapters showing how they lack the maturity to operate the variety of gifts that they have. Their loyalties were immature. Their lack of unity was immature. Their lack of sexual purity was immature. Their misunderstanding of marriage and singleness was immature. Their desire to express freedom was immature. Now he is going to turn to what their Sunday gatherings looked like, and they were immature.
Now, this will be hard for us to imagine in this place. So maybe pretend you are somewhere else. But the Corinthian gatherings were chaos. Tons of people spoke ...
