Good morning. We are taking five weeks to talk about this idea of ''soul hunger.'' Back when I was in high school in the 1980s, there was a musician named Sting who wrote a song called ''Russians.'' So remember, this was during the Cold War between the US and the Soviet Union. And some of you remember this-there was a lot of suspicion and fear between our countries. (Can you imagine feeling suspicious toward Russia? Crazy thought). So the last line in the song said...

We share the same biology, regardless of ideology.
But what might save us, me and you,
Is if the Russians love their children too.

In other words, if we want peace, the first step is recognizing that Russians are not so different from us. They love their kids just like we do.

And that's really the starting point for this series: this reality that even though people might look very different on the surface, deep down, we basically want the same things-things like love and security and meaning and peace. And the question is: Why is that? Why are people so similar? Can you account for that, like some people believe, purely through evolutionary biology? And the premise of this series is...no. There's something more going on here. And I'm not endorsing or critiquing evolutionary theory; I'm just saying there's something here that's beyond the reach of science.

The Judeo-Christian view of humanity is that people were created in the image of God, so God is the One who placed our deepest desires in our hearts. And if that's true, then if I try to satisfy those desires apart from God, I will be restless and dissatisfied. So this series is all about what it looks like to satisfy our deepest longings through the One who gave us those longings in the first place.

And today I want to talk about the universal human desire for security.
