Hungry for Freedom (3 of 3)
Series: Soul Hunger
Dave Gustavsen
Galatians 5:1, 13
Good morning. We're taking five weeks to talk about this idea of ''soul hunger.'' Why is it that humans have the same basic desires? Even though we have all kinds of outward differences, why is it that all people want things like love and security and freedom and significance? Is it because, way back in the ancient history of humans, certain traits and certain behaviors raised the likelihood of survival, and so those traits were passed on through the genetic code, and that's why we're wired the way we are? I am a lover of science. I think that many times, the church has unnecessarily stood in opposition to science, and that hurt the church's credibility. BUT, I do not believe you can account for the deep similarity between humans purely through science. There's something more than biology going on here.
So the premise of this series is this: the reasons humans have these common desires is that we've been created in the image of the same God. And if that's true, then if I try to satisfy my desires apart from God, I'll be frustrated. As Augustine said centuries ago, ''You have made us for yourself, Lord, and our hearts are restless until they find their rest in you.'' So in this series, we're talking about what it could look like to satisfy our deepest desires in the One who gave us those desires in the first place.
And today I want to talk about the deep human longing for freedom. Our Scripture reading is very short; let's look at Galatians 5, verse 1 and verse 13:
1 It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.
And then verse 13...13 You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love. This is the Word of God.
So from the teaching of Scripture I want to talk about The Desire for Freedo ...
