2 Timothy 1:1-7
Do you have a good memory? How well do you remember people's names? Are you good at remembering special dates such as birthdays and anniversaries? Have you committed Bible verses to memory? Over the course of my ministry, countless people have lamented to me that they don't have a good memory. Often such people seem to minimize the importance of their memory. They shrug their shoulders as if to say, ''I've never had a good memory . . . and I never will.'' Indeed, most people don't have a good memory. Those who appear to have a good memory usually work hard at remembering people's names, special dates, and Scriptures. It doesn't come naturally or easily; effort is required.
However, a good memory is far more important than most Christians think. In 2 Tim 1:1-7 we will discover that: A key to ministry is a good memory. Are you presently happy with your ministry? Have you found your niche? If there is any room for improvement in your ministry, recall God's past, present, and future faithfulness. This will motivate you to action! In these seven verses, the apostle Paul provides two reminders that will help us develop a good memory.
1. Remember that true life is found in Christ (1:1-2). Paul begins this great letter by esteeming Christ: ''Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, according to the promise of life in Christ Jesus'' (1:1). Twice in this opening verse Paul mentions ''Christ Jesus'' (cf. 1:2). Paul's life and language revolve around Christ Jesus. This verse reminds us that our lives and ministries should be all about Jesus. Is this true of you today? Are you consumed with Christ? Paul was devoted to Jesus because he understood that his apostolic authority came from God (''by the will of God''). The apostle recognized that he had a specific calling upon his life.
