2 Timothy 4:1-8
Last words are incredibly important. In a sermon, last words should be memorable. In a debate, last words often determine victory or defeat. In a wedding ceremony, the last words are the best words. In a lifespan, last words are the most defining. Perhaps you've been at the bedside of a loved one who was about to die. You probably leaned forward hanging on this person's every word. Last words are incredibly important.
In 2 Tim 4:1-8 Paul imparts his last words to his young protégé Timothy. This is my favorite section of Scripture. Yet, many Bible students assume that these verses are intended for pastors like Timothy. These verses, however, are relevant to anyone in local church ministry. Moreover, we will see that this text is applicable to all Christians (see 4:8). These eight verses can be summarized in eight poignant words: Live and serve in light of that day. Since we live in the last days, Paul yearns for us to prepare for that day when we will stand before Jesus Christ and give an account of our lives and ministries. With this in mind, Paul imparts two solemn charges: (1) Fulfill your ministry and (2) pursue your crown.
1. Fulfill your ministry (4:1-5). In these opening verses, Paul tells Timothy how to preach the Word and live it out. This section begins with the words, ''I SOLEMNLY CHARGE YOU!'' This is a grave expression. But before we consider the content of Paul's charge we must observe the clause ''in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by His appearing and His kingdom'' (4:1). This phrase serves as a parenthesis to the charge to ''preach the Word'' in 4:2. So before we heed the essential charge let's break down this parenthesis.
