BE PRODUCTIVE
Stephen Whitney
2 Thessalonians 3:6-12

In the ancient world, there was little dignity associated with work.
Slaves were assigned menial and backbreaking tasks, while the upper-class families engaged in leisurely social and cultural pursuits. The Egyptians said, ''Labor is degrading; idleness is desirable.'' Even today some people downgrade work by trying
to convince us that it is nothing more than the expression of a
Puritan ethic which is now out of date.

You may have seen the bumper sticker that says.
''Work is for those who don't know how to fish.''
The truth of Scripture is: God ordained that we should work
before Adam and Eve sinned. Genesis 2:15 God took Adam
and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it.
John Calvin - ''Men were created to employ themselves in
some work, and not to lie down in inactivity and idleness.''

The Protestant work ethic emphasizes that hard work, discipline and frugality; which are values espoused by the Protestant faith that began with Martin Luther (1500's). They believed that work was given to man by God even before the fall as Adam was
to take care of the Garden of Eden. Work is a sacred duty which benefits both the individual and society and therefore should be gone to the glory of God no matter what task you are doing.

The Puritans (1600's) believed that all work was God's work.
Their two main goals of work, therefore were: first, the glory of God and second, for the welfare of other people. William Perkins ''The true end of our lives is to do service to God in serving man.''
When they emigrated to New England, they brought that work ethic with them and helping define the culture of what would become the United States of America.

People are to work to support themselves instead of depending
on someone else. It is sad that in our contemporary culture
people are given free handouts which then leads to laziness.
