Earthquakes are startling because they come suddenly and there
is nothing that you can do, but wait it out. The shock waves can split concrete in an instant. Buildings sway back and forth.
To make matters worse, after the main quake, there may be
aftershocks for days which further undermine your security.
Earthquakes devastate entire communities and countries.
The Great Alaskan earthquake occurred at 5:36 P.M. on Good Friday March 27, 1962 across south-central Alaska. It lasted four minutes and thirty-eight seconds with a magnitude of 9.2. It was the most powerful earthquake recorded in North American history and the second most powerful recorded in world history.
Anchorage sustained great destruction or damage to many inadequately earthquake engineered houses, buildings, and infrastructure (paved streets, sidewalks, water and sewer mains, electrical systems). Two hundred miles southwest, some areas near Kodiak were permanently raised by 30 feet while other areas southeast of Anchorage dropped as much as 8 feet.

Paul had taught the Thessalonians about the coming of Christ
and the Day of the Lord, but something had happened which
caused them to be confused and worried, thinking that God's judgment had already begun.

He does not want them to be worried that Christ has come and somehow, they have missed his coming and have been left behind.

Shaken (NIV unsettled) - Gk. motion caused by winds or storms.
It was used of a ship adrift from its mooring meaning not stable.
Alarmed (KJB troubled) - Gk. frightened (occurs only 3x).
