2 Thessalonians 1:11-12
The disciples in Antioch had the distinction of being the first followers of Christ to be called Christians in 45 AD just 12 years
after Jesus was crucified. The ''ian'' means belonging to the party of, the people saw believers as belonging to the Jesus party like other people belonged to so other political party.
To be identified as ''belonging to the party of Jesus'' is not only
a privilege, but it also includes responsibility. We are expected
to live up to our name and not bring disgrace to our Savior.
A soldier was brought to Alexander the Great (d. 333 BC) to face charges of gross misconduct. At the end of the trial, the world conqueror said to the soldier, ''What is your name?'' ''Alexander,
was the reply. The General responded, ''I said what is your name?'' The soldier again replied, ''Alexander.'' The Emperor
again asked, ''What is your name?'' When the soldier answered
for the third time, the General angrily responded, ''You are found guilty of your crime as charged. Then he added, ''Either change
your conduct or change your name.''
Background
Paul had thanked God because they stood firm in their faith in spite of the persecution they faced as believers in Jesus Christ (:3-4).
He went on to encourage the believers to remain steadfast in their
faith knowing that God will certainly judge those who persecute
them when Christ returns in all of his glory (:5-10).
WORTHY OF THEIR CALLING :11a
To this end - that they would stand firm in their faith for Christ
Paul continues to faithfully pray they would always honor Christ.
He knew that Satan would do everything he could to discourage
them from continuing to remain faithful to their profession of faith.
