Yesterday was an exciting day for the Krell family. Our sixteen-year-old son, Joshua, passed his driver's test! As you may know from personal experience, teaching your child how to drive is an exercise in patience. In fact, it can be one of the most nerve-racking experiences of a parent's life-a true trial by fire. Just recall sitting in the passenger's seat with knees knocking and white knuckles draped over the emergency brake. Whether it's parallel parking or backing around the curb, patience is paramount. Every parent has been involved in close calls with his or her student driver. These trials are a part of learning to drive. By the way, whoever taught you to drive is to be commended for an astounding degree of patience. So be sure to thank your instructor(s) today.

While patience in general is difficult, patience amidst unjust suffering is humanly impossible. How can you exercise patience when you are rejected by your spouse or family? How can you exhibit patience when you are illegitimately laid off or fired? How can you model patience when you are diagnosed with a life-threatening illness in the prime of your life? Fortunately, James provides supernatural motivation that will enable us to exercise patience. To put it simply, we will discover that patience is worth the wait. In 5:7-12 James provides two disciplines to help us develop the virtue of patience.

1. Wait patiently for Christ's return (5:7-9). The return of Christ is one of the greatest motivations for patient perseverance. So critical is this theme that three times in these three verses Christ's return is emphasized. In 5:7a James writes: ''Therefore be patient, brethren, until the coming of the Lord.'' The conjunction ''therefore'' (oun) looks back to the previous context where James' readers are undergoing suffering at the hands of wealthy landlords (5:1-6).
