God's general and specific call upon the believer's life can be mysterious. Nearly every believer has asked difficult questions such as: ''God, what do you want me to do? Where do you want me to go? What is your timetable? Specifically, where do you want me to go to college? Who do you want me to marry? What do you want me to do for a living? How should I invest my money? Most importantly, how can I know the answers to these questions?'' Maybe you feel like life is just too confusing and filled with too many complicated choices. It is easy to stress about making wrong choices and potentially missing out on your calling. What's a Christian to do?

Luke 5:1-11 reveals how to respond to God's call. Peter is the central character in this narrative, and although he is a believer, he is not yet a mature one. The encounter occurs about a year into Jesus' public ministry. Jesus has already met Peter and given him the name Cephas or Peter (John 1:42). Now it's several months later and Jesus has come to preach in Bethsaida where Peter has a fishing business. For weeks Jesus had been preaching in the area, healing the sick, and casting out demons (4:38-44). He is now ready to move forward and gather His team for a profound kingdom impact.

1. Jesus preaches from Simon's boat (5:1-3). Luke's account begins in 5:1-3: ''Now it happened that while the crowd was pressing around Him [Jesus] and listening to the word of God [likely the kingdom of God, cf. 4:43], He was standing by the lake of Gennesaret [the Sea of Galilee]; and He saw two boats lying at the edge of the lake; but the fishermen had gotten out of them and were washing their nets. And He got into one of the boats, which was Simon's, and asked him to put out a little way from the land. And He sat down [like a typical teaching rabbi] and began teaching the people from the boat.'' The opening phrase, ''Now it happened ...
