Hebrews 13:4
I can be a perfectionist when it comes to caring for my clothes. I can't stand wrinkles, so I will make sure my clothes are ironed. When I notice a speck of lint on me, I will immediately attempt to remove it. If I see an exposed thread, I usually pull it off. Now this is where my perfectionism goes too far. I remember occasions when I have found myself wrestling with a thread, only to have the thread get the better of me. Often, the result is that the garment unravels.
Today, the institution of marriage is unraveling like a cheap sweater. Marriage is no longer esteemed. As a result, fewer young people are getting married. Cohabitation and unwed childbearing is on the rise. Many that do marry will end in divorce. Others will remain married but are emotionally divorced. Further, our country is even attempting to redefine marriage. Things appear bleak. Yet, this is not a time to lose heart. Now is the time that we must take back lost ground. The reason is simple: Our nation, our church, and our families are only as strong as our marriages. Enough weak marriages add up to a weak nation, a weak church, and a weak family.
So what is the solution to our ills? Follow God's directions. When you read the label of your average cold medicine, it will say something to this effect: ''For best results, follow instructions of maker.'' If such advice is good for cold relief, how much more it is needed for the relief of sick marriage relationships! God, the Maker of marriage, has given us clear directions in Hebrews 13:4. But before we look at 13:4, we must consider the context. In 13:1-6, the Hebrew writer stresses the Christian's love life.
