Revelation 3:7-13
Are you going through a difficult season in your personal life? Do you feel like as soon as you work through one trial, another one comes up? Are you just weary of struggling? I want you to imagine that I've filled three pots with boiling water. In the first pot I place carrots, in the second, eggs, and in the last, ground coffee beans. Now imagine I just let these pots sit and boil. After awhile I fish out the carrots and place them in a bowl. I pull the eggs out and place them in a bowl. I pour the coffee into a bowl. If you were able to feel the carrots, you would note that they were soft. If you tried to crack the egg, you would discover it hard-boiled. Finally, if you sipped the coffee, you would taste its rich flavor.
Each of these items faced the same adversity-boiling water-but each reacted differently. The carrot went in strong, hard, and unrelenting, but after being subjected to the boiling water, it softened and became weak. The egg was fragile. Its thin outer shell had protected its liquid interior, but after sitting through the boiling water, its inside hardened. The ground coffee beans were unique, however. By being in the boiling water, they changed the water! This leads to a simple question: ''When adversity strikes, which are you?''
Far too many Christians discover that when adversity strikes they're more like carrots or eggs than coffee. This results in many Christians and many churches bringing about little or no change in society. Fortunately, this doesn't have to be the case. The church in Philadelphia was the smallest of the seven churches, but the most influential. We can learn from this great church how to faithfully serve God in the midst of great adversity. In Rev 3:7-13 Jesus calls us to recognize that perseverance produces opportunity and opposition.
