Have you ever had a bad day? I mean a really bad day. Stop and think of the worst day you've ever had. Is that day locked in your mind? Good! Now watch the following video montage of Mayhem from Allstate. [Play a 94-second video.] How does your ''bad day'' compare with Mayhem's? It probably pales in comparison, right? Now, I want you to imagine a series of days a hundred times worse than your very worst day. If you can envision that, then you may have an inkling of what the tribulation will be like.

I know what you're thinking: Oh, great, another cheery sermon from Pastor Pleasant; I feel like I'm experiencing some tribulation right now with this sermon series. Last week's sermon, ''The Worst Is Yet to Come,'' led one of our small groups to ask: ''Can Revelation get any worse?'' Perhaps this study has you feeling a little discouraged and heavy-hearted. I feel your pain-I really do! These sermons through the tribulation section (chs. 6-18) are brutal, and they aren't designed to ''win friends and influence people.'' They are, however, meant to teach us much about God's character and His kingdom agenda. From an eternal perspective, nothing is more important.

By way of reminder, Revelation 6 kicked off the tribulation period, which will be the worst period of human history. It will literally be hell on earth! The Bible presents several purposes for the tribulation. For our purposes, I will share two: (1) To demonstrate God's righteous wrath as He judges a wicked world. (2) To convince many Israelites scattered throughout the world that Jesus is the Christ. In 9:1-21 we see another purpose of the tribulation: to unmask Satan's true character. While in the future people will go to hell, in Revelation 9, hell comes to people. Two sobering realities emanate from this text.
