Revelation 11:1-19
One spring day several years ago our family was enjoying lunch when a navy blue sports car pulled into our driveway. Shocked, we sprung from the dining room table to see who on earth mistakenly pulled into our driveway. I immediately recognized that this car was a Porsche 911 Carrera S Cabriolet. Lo' and behold, we actually knew the couple in the car! Imagine our shock when we discovered it was our long lost friends-the vice president of an academic institution who was driving through town! After exchanging pleasantries, my friend told me to get in. He proceeded to take me for the joy ride of a lifetime. I've never been so scared in my entire life. Faster than I could blink, we reached speeds of 100 MPH on our country road. We took one corner that was marked 20 MPH at 75 MPH. I was so terrified, I couldn't even catch my breath, much less speak. As the car came to a screeching halt in my driveway, I told my friend that I didn't want to meet Jesus this way. How would we explain this to Him? What would the front page of The Olympian read? ''Two born-again theologians die in joy ride in Porsche 911.''
Now just imagine that my friend then offers to let me take his Porsche for a spin. Only when I jump behind the wheel and turn the key, nothing happens. Looking down at the fuel gauge I notice a big fat E. My friend bled the tank dry! He then says: ''This car is light. A good push will get it moving. Hop in and I'll show you.'' This is an absurd scenario, isn't it? But it's even more asinine to believe that God would give His friends an important calling without the power to pursue it. Fortunately, Revelation 11 reveals that God always empowers His witnesses.
Revelation 11 is a part of a parenthetical section that began in 10:1 and runs through 14:22. Chapter 11 does not advance the chronological sequence of the prophetic events, but parenthetically de ...
