Revelation 21:1-22:5
Do you enjoy flying? Do you struggle with anxiety or physical problems when you fly? My wife, Lori, grew up in a family that loved to fly. Her dad and grandpa both flew small airplanes. A favorite family outing would be to take the plane out. If Lori was especially privileged, her granddad would sometimes let her steer from the co-pilot's seat. Because it had a special place in their family, Lori has always desired to get her pilot's license like her grandfather and father before her. Unfortunately, since Lori was a very small girl she has always experienced excruciating inner ear pain when she flies. She compares it to having an icepick thrust into her ears or eyes! This happens every time she is in an airplane, regardless of its type or size. It has gotten so bad that Lori doesn't like to fly under any circumstances. Whenever an opportunity is presented to fly, she has to weigh the destination with the pain she will encounter along the way. Sometimes the final destination is worth the pain.
Four years ago our former congregation gave my wife and me an all-expense paid trip to Maui for completing our degrees (PhD and BS). It was the opportunity of a lifetime. Lori was initially very hesitant because she knew the pain she would have to endure. However, I reminded her that she would be spending a week in a five-star Hawaiian resort with the man of her dreams . . . and no kids! Eventfully, I convinced her that the final destination was worth the pain.
Life can sometimes only be endured in light of the destination. Maybe it seems like you and your spouse are always at each other's throats and your children never seem to obey. Perhaps you're in the midst of significant health trials and the doctors have no answers. Maybe your job is unbearable and no matter how hard you try your boss is never satisfied. Perhaps your financial woes keep piling up one after the other ...
