Glorifying God
Ephesians 2: 1-10
Jason Dees
Why are we planting a church and why do we do everything that we do?
A year ago right now I had all of these mixed emotions. The leading one for me was sadness. I was very sad because I had announced that I was leaving Valleydale Church in Birmingham, Alabama to plant a church in Atlanta. As excited and hopeful as I was, it was very difficult for me to leave a church that I loved. Being a pastor of a church and giving your soul to that church and then stepping away is a very hard thing to do. This is especially hard when you are leaving that church to go to an idea - not a church, not a building, not a budget, just an idea.
But I was comforted and encouraged by the fact that this idea of a church had such an amazing champion and such an amazing mother church in Johnson Ferry Baptist Church. And here we are today, only 50 days away from our launch and already the Lord is forming a church community of people that love God deeply and that love one another as well.
Now, 50 days away from our launch, 11 months after I was first introduced to you for the first time, I thought it would be good for me to answer the question of why - why are we planting a church? Actually, I hope the reason I am planting a church is the same reason that I do everything that I do, and the same reason, I hope, that you do everything that you do.
If you have your Bible I want you to turn with me to Ephesians chapter 2. We are going to be looking at verses 1-10, one of the most honest, humbling, life giving, inspiring and motivating sections of the whole Bible. The answer to the question - why are we planting a church and why do we do everything that we do? - can actually be found in the final verse of this section.
Ephesians 2:10:
''For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.''
