John 8:31
A Message for Encounter Christian Church
It's July 4 weekend, and Tuesday is INDEPENDENCE DAY - a day we celebrate as a nation to commemorate the signing of the Declaration of Independence where we were no longer tied to Great Britain, but enjoy the freedoms of being an independent nation.
But there is another kind of freedom that I want to talk to you about today. It is TRUE FREEDOM because it is the liberation that God brings to a person's life when He sets them free on the INSIDE. They are set free from the control of another task master and they are freed from the tyranny and bondage of sin.
SIN IS THE MASTER OF SLAVERY
In 1983 I gave my heart to Jesus after my father had his first heart attack. I remember praying for him and he made it through open heart surgery. But it was his lifestyle and his habits that had caused the heart problems in the first place. So as a young zealous Christian, I went to him a few months after the surgery and read to him the account of the man healed at the Pool of Bethesda. In that story Jesus heals a man who was crippled for 38 years and after he was healed Jesus sees him again. The story is in:
John 5:9 And immediately the man was made well, took up his bed, and walked. And that day was the Sabbath. 10 The Jews therefore said to him who was cured, ''It is the Sabbath; it is not lawful for you to carry your bed.'' 11 He answered them, ''He who made me well said to me, 'Take up your bed and walk.''' 12 Then they asked him, ''Who is the Man who said to you, 'Take up your bed and walk'?'' 13 But the one who was healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn, a multitude being in that place. 14 Afterward Jesus found him in the temple, and said to him, ''See, you have been made well. Sin no more, lest a worse thing come upon you.''
I read this passage to my dad - not very wise. His response was ''I am not a sinner.''
