Galatians 5:1
A Message for Encounter Christian Church
We've been talking about being set free in the sermon series called ''Free Indeed.'' Last week we talked about the freedom that Christ brought into our lives when He saved us from our sins. The bondage of sin has been broken. We talked about there being an ongoing liberation that takes place in an individual as they allow God to transform them by the Truth. Every day, we can become more free as we replace the lies that have led us into bondage with the Truth of God's Word. Jesus said, ''whom the Son sets free, is free indeed.'' Free In-Deed, free in reality, free in practice, free as evidenced by everyone around us. They see us becoming MORE FREE!
This morning, I want to talk to you about getting freed from religion. In the United States, freedom of religion is a constitutionally protected right provided in the religion clauses of the First Amendment. The First Amendment prohibits the Congress from making a law ''respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof''.
I am so glad we live in a country that has been given the freedom to express our worship to God, and that our military service men and women have fought and are still fighting to keep it that way. We have been given the freedom of religion. For some of us in this congregation, we've been set free FROM religion!
According to the dictionary, RELIGION is a personal set OR institutionalized system of religious attitudes, beliefs, and practices.
I want to talk to you today about knowing the difference between RELIGION and RELATIONSHIP. True religion is borne out of a relationship with God, not a set of rules and regulations. So how do we recognize true religion from false? How do we know if what we are doing is borne out of relationship or religion or works? How do we get freed from the bondage of religion?
