Ruth 1:1-22
Keith Krell
On November 10, 2015, Amanda Grace Blackburn, a pastor's wife in Indiana, was the victim of a home invasion. In the process, she was sexually assaulted and then fatally shot in the head. To make matters even more devastating, she was twelve-weeks pregnant. The grief that Amanda's husband, Davey, and their one-year old son will experience is tragic. But tragedy and loss strikes Christians, too.
Perhaps you've lost a loved one and you're still grieving the loss. Maybe you've had a child rebel and the emotional toll still keeps you awake at night. Perhaps you've lost your job and the stress has you feeling overwhelmed. Maybe you and your spouse aren't able to have children and a lifelong dream has died within you. Perhaps you've yearned for a spouse for many years and now you've realized that you may spend the rest of your life single. Life's tragic circumstances often lead to despair and depression. It can seem like heaven is both distant and silent. God's very presence can seem non-existent.
How do you respond to life's tough situations? What are your prayers like amidst a desperate condition? Do you find yourself focusing more on the Lord or on the problem? We must honestly ask and answer these questions because the trials of loneliness, aging, and suffering are ever upon us. Fortunately, Ruth 1 provides answers to life's difficult questions. So let's begin our study through one of the greatest masterpieces of narrative art in the Bible-the book of Ruth.
