When my son Justin turned sixteen, Lori and I gave him a bumper pool table. Justin and I enjoy playing pool together. Sadly, I'm a rank amateur while Justin is rather skilled. Being the gentleman that he is, Justin likes teaching me how to play the game. If I listen to what he says and observe his shots, I can at least be competitive. Amusingly, when I'm preparing to line up difficult shots, Justin likes to step in and show me how to make the shot. He takes the shot, usually puts it in the pocket, and resets the ball for me. This gets old really fast. I feel like I know what I'm doing, and I want to do things my way. However, when I don't listen to Justin and observe his ways, I usually don't fare too well. Justin senses this inevitable outcome and will frequently say, ''Get wrecked!'' When he gets really intense, he'll even say, ''Get wrecked, Scrub!'' This is slang for ''be utterly defeated!'' This is Justin's brand of daddy discipline.
On a much more severe note, when we refuse to listen to what God says and observe His ways, we too can ''Get wrecked!'' God has an uncanny way of giving us over to our sin (cf. Rom 1:24, 26, 28) and meting out consequences for our actions. The apostle Paul said it best: ''Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap'' (Gal 6:7). If you and I are playing around with sin, God loves us enough to say: ''Get wrecked!'' He then disciplines us in order to restore us to our first love. The theme of the book of Judges is: God's people disobey, and then He disciplines and delivers them. Judges may be the most gruesome book in the Bible. (If you read it all at once you will probably need to take a Valium afterwards!) It is the story of people's self-destruction when they cycle further and further into the abyss of their own terrible decisions.
