Have you ever doubted God's promises? Have you ever questioned His work in your life? Perhaps you recently lost your job and you doubt God's promise to meet your basic physical and material needs. You've seen Him dramatically provide for others, but you question that He'll do so for you. Maybe you're in a seemingly impossible marriage and you're ready to call it quits. You know that God has worked in other people's marriages, but you doubt His ability to work in yours. Or perhaps you're terribly lonely and your friends are getting married at an unprecedented rate. You doubt that God will ever bring someone into your life. Maybe you battle chronic back pain or migraines and you doubt you can carry on one more day. You yearn for even temporary relief, but doubt God will ever give it. These scenarios (and many others) are far more common than most of us think.
In Judges 6-8 we will study Gideon-a man who doubts God's promises and questions His work. You could say Gideon is a lot like you and me. Although Gideon eventually becomes a great hero, he's also filled with fear. In fact, he's one of the most fearful and doubtful individuals in the entire Bible. No biblical character requires and receives more divine assurance than Gideon. Yet, at a specific point in Gideon's life he becomes the man God wants him to be. Therefore, the Gideon unit is the key to the entire book of Judges. Gideon's judgeship receives the most extensive narration in the Judges: 100 verses comprising three chapters. The author of Judges spilled so much ink on Gideon because God wants you and me to be faith-filled believers who overcome our doubts and obediently trust Him. The word for today is: Believe God's promises and move from fear to faith.
