Judges 10:6-12:7
Have you ever heard Christians exclaim: ''I don't need Bible and theology. I just need practical application. I need to experience God. I need to know how to relate.'' Perhaps you've made some of these very same statements yourself? Initially, these remarks sound so good, don't they? Let's not get bogged down in all of the biblical and theological details. Instead, let's make sure that we're relevant and that people experience of God, right? Imagine you visit a doctor. You say to the doctor, ''I have a pain in my stomach.'' The doctor says, ''Well, you need to know I don't pay much attention to medicine. I took that stuff at school, but I haven't paid much attention to it since. What I'm into is a 'bedside manner.' I want people to feel comfortable around me. Why don't we just cut you open and see what's inside?''
Obviously, you wouldn't stand for such antics! Your doctor needs to know medicine and how to properly diagnose you. When everything is said and done, who really cares about his ''bedside manner'' if he knows how to treat you? It's unlikely that you're going to hang out with your doctor after he gets off work. Similarly, as followers of Jesus Christ, we must know Bible and theology. If you have a deep faith in God and a shallow theology, you'll be giving yourself to superficiality and nonsense, and you can do great damage to yourself and others. Therefore, in Judges 10-12, we will discover that right theology and a thorough understanding of the Bible are essential. To put it succinctly: Religious zeal without biblical knowledge is dangerous. Judges 10-12 breaks down into five scenes.
Scene 1: The devastating demise of Israel (10:6-16). Our story begins in 10:6 like a broken record. Israel once again does evil in the sight of the Lord. In the 300-year history recorded in the book of Judges, this is the sixth time that Israel has turned their back ...
