Galatians 3:15-25
On Wednesday nights we try to give you an in-depth Bible study. If you really want deep Bible study, t then Wednesday night is the time to be here. I try to dig a little bit deeper because the congregation is primarily an adult congregation. So, I'm trying to give you something to make it worth your while to come.
We are looking at the book of Galatians and we are following it verse by verse. Keep in mind the setting of this particular writing of Paul. It is quite a different atmosphere from some of his other books. Paul is dealing with false doctrine in this book. He has won people to the Lord in Galatia. As the New Testament pattern is--he won them to Christ, they were baptized, and they formed local congregations of people. These were people who had been in the bondage of paganism. They have experienced now the freedom which is available to us in the Lord Jesus Christ-- saved by grace, through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
Shortly thereafter, however, teachers had come to these churches in Galatia and were basically saying this: ''What Paul taught was fine as far as it goes. Paul didn't give you the whole thing. It is true that Jesus died on the cross and that you are saved by His death on the cross. But you are not only saved BY what Jesus did on the cross. You are also saved by what YOU DO. You folks are Gentiles. We are Jews. God has revealed Himself through us--the Jews. It was to us the Jews that God gave the Ten Commandments and the Old Testament law. If you want to be saved you must not only receive what Christ did on the cross, but you must also do the works of the law. You have to work for it; you have to earn it yourself.''
This got Paul's attention. He gets going. He sees that the very truth of the Gospel is at stake. Now, in chapters 3 and 4 he will be expounding from the Scriptures themselves to prove that no one is saved by the works of the ...
