1 Samuel 23:1-29
Are you involved in a cat-and-mouse game? If so, it's likely that you're the mouse who is being played by the cat. Perhaps you have a boss who has it in for you because you're a Christian. She constantly tries to set you up for failure so that she can fire you, but her attempts always seem to backfire. Maybe you have a spouse who commits all kinds of sin with the hope that you will divorce him. Yet, you choose to persevere in your marriage, honor God, and not give him the satisfaction. Perhaps you go to school with a student who is jealous of your accomplishments or popularity and is seeking to ruin your reputation. However, you choose to love and forgive her.
In 1 Samuel 23 David and Saul are involved in a cat-and-mouse game. Saul is the ''cat'' and David is the ''mouse.'' Both Saul and David have access to human informants. However, David seeks divine direction, while Saul places his trust in human intelligence. Consequently, David the mouse evades Saul the cat. David's success reveals that in times of adversity we must seek God's will; He will direct us in all our ways. Specifically, this text reveals that God loves last minute heroics.
1. David succeeds at Keilah (23:1-14). Our story begins with a note of urgency: ''Then they [the local people] told David, saying, 'Behold, the Philistines are fighting against Keilah and are plundering the threshing floors''' (23:1). While David and his men are running from King Saul, his forces receive news that an Israelite city about twenty miles southeast of Jerusalem is being attacked by the Philistines. Specifically, the Philistines are ''plundering the threshing floors.'' The threshing floors are where the harvested grain is beaten out so that grain can be prepared for making food. They are also the place where threshed grain is stored. By looting the threshing floors, the Philistines are robbing Keilah's citizen ...
