Have you ever wondered if your life is ever going to change? Does it seem like you're reliving the same battles over and over again? Perhaps you have a dysfunctional parent. You continue to hope that things will be different, but they never are. Maybe you have a boss or classmate who repeatedly puts you down. Instead of things getting better, they get worse. Perhaps you have conflict with a fellow church member. You pray for reconciliation, but the relationship only seems to deteriorate further. Some problem people don't seem to go away. Like a jack-in-the-box they continue to pop up at the worst possible moments.

In 1 Samuel 26 David has a case of déjà vu (lit., ''already seen''). Chapter 26 is so similar to chapter 24 that some scholars draw the conclusion that these accounts are one and the same. However, there are too many differences to adopt this view. Instead, chapter 26 is more like retaking a test in school. If you fail a particular test or want to improve your grade, your teacher may allow you to retake the test. Similarly, when we fail a spiritual test or need to improve our response, God often allows us to retake or repeat the same basic test. I think the reason we find a second incident in chapter 26 so similar to the one described in chapter 24 is because God wanted David to retake the same test in order to receive a higher score.

1. David spares Saul's life . . . again (26:1-12). The narrator provides the historical setting in 26:1-5: ''Then the Ziphites came to Saul at Gibeah, saying, 'Is not David hiding on the hill of Hachilah, which is before Jeshimon?' [The Ziphites serve as Saul's informants even though they were kinsmen of David. This is the second time they have betrayed David (cf. 23:19).] So Saul arose and went down to the wilderness of Ziph, having with him three thousand chosen men of Israel, to search for David in the wilderness of Z ...
