1 John 2:12-17
If your house was burning down, what would you grab on your way out the door? Just stop and ponder that question. In 2012 Foster Huntington wrote a book entitled, The Burning House: What Would You Take? He recorded the results of the question: ''If your house was burning down, what would you take?'' As you can imagine, no one grabs a flat screen TV, a designer blouse, or a Smartphone. (Okay, some would grab their phone.) Here are some of the answers: My childhood teddy bear, my journal, my grandfather's Bible, the earrings I wore on my wedding day, the ring my father gave me when I was 12. One woman responded, ''I would grab my husband and our three cats.'' What about you? What would you take? How you answer this question can tell a lot about you.
In 1 John 2:12-17 John poses two penetrating questions: (1) Who are you and (2) what do you love? This text divides into two parts: encouragement (2:12-14) and exhortation (2:15-17). First, we're encouraged by who we are in Christ. Secondly, we're given an exhortation not to love the world, but to love God and do His will. If you're like me, you need to be reminded of who you are in Christ. Every time I read through the power-packed letter of 1 John, I'm reminded of how short I fall. It's easy to think, ''I struggle so much there must be something wrong with me. Maybe I'm missing some secret key that so many other people seem to have. Maybe I'm not a Christian after all, because it doesn't seem like true Christians would struggle like I do. Maybe the Christian thing didn't take for me because I'm some special case of bad.'' Or maybe you're thinking, ''This Christian life is just too hard for me. I'm so tired of my struggle with sin. I stepped into the light of God's presence and it revealed so many issues I don't know where to start. It's easier to hide in the dark. I'll never be able to keep God's commandments. I'll never ...
