2 Corinthians 8:1-6
This past November (2014), Jason Brown decided to become a farmer in North Carolina. He's now on a mission to feed the state's residents who are hungry. He purchased 1,000 acres of farmland and has started growing crops like sweet potatoes and cucumbers. Having never farmed a day in his life, he learned farming from watching YouTube videos and talking to local farmers. He's calling the farm, the ''First Fruits Farm,'' and is donating the first fruits of every harvest to area food pantries. He just recently finished his first harvest of five acres of sweet potatoes and gave a whopping 100,000 pounds of food to the needy. What makes Brown's story especially fascinating is that he was an NFL Center for the St. Louis Rams and left behind a $37 million contract! In fact, his agent told him, ''You're making the biggest mistake of your life.'' Yet, Brown looked right back at him and said, ''No, I'm not. No, I'm not.''
Why would Brown do such a thing? A follow up question might be: Why didn't he just give a large donation to help provide for North Carolina's poor? In response to these questions, Brown says that he wanted to have a hands-on experience at providing for the needs of the poor. He says God inspired his plan and that he's never felt more successful. Whether or not you understand what Brown has done, you have to respect a man who will ''put his money where his mouth is.''
What about you? Have you ever yearned to be radically generous like Jason Brown? Have you ever wondered what it would be like if you stepped out in financial faith and pursued generous giving? If you're a believer, God is calling you to generous giving because giving is a response to grace. Generous grace giving begins when we recognize the extreme emphasis that the Bible places on money. Consider the following: The Bible devotes twice as many verses to money than to faith and prayer combin ...
