Psalm 126
7/7/02
Twenty years ago today I came to be your pastor. I
wanted to bring a message which would set the tone for
my ministry with you and what I'm all about. The Lord
led me to Psalm 126. This sets forth the commitment to
tell the truth of the Lord Jesus Christ and how people
can be forgiven of their sins and know Jesus in a
personal way and go to heaven when they die. I have
had this commitment all the years I have been
preaching. Through these twenty years God has blessed
us and we have seen literally thousands of people come
to know Christ as their Savior.
So, on this 20th Anniversary, I felt led of the Lord
to come again to Psalm 126. You have heard this many,
many times. Along the way, through these years, I have
come back again and again to it. One of the things
some folks do in their Bibles is to put out in the
margin the name of the preacher and the date when it
was preached. Having preached through all of the books
of the New Testament at least once and half of them
twice; having preached through all the books of the
Old Testament with the exception of eleven, you can
imagine that it has been a rare thing when I have gone
back to a passage of Scripture. But this is one of
those I have turned to again and again. It just serves
as a reminder to me and a reminder to us as a church
of what I'm to be all about and what we are to be all
about as a church.
I don't know that there has ever been a time in all of
the years of my ministry when the truths which are
given to us in Psalms are more appropriate or more
needed than in the year 2002. We are living in the
post nine/eleven days in America. Since what happened
on September 11 in our land, the landscape in America
and indeed in the world has changed. We are living in
a world where there are international terrorists who
are committed to destroying our values and our way of
life ...
