Revelation 8
1/6/02
As you move through the book of The Revelation you
will find that there is a series of sevens. In
chapters 2 and 3 we have given to us the seven
churches. As we look at these seven churches we see a
panoramic view of the church age from the beginning-
the apostles-to the conclusion-the apostasy.
Then when you move into that period of times known as
the Great Tribulation when judgment is poured out upon
an unbelieving earth, you will find some sevens also.
You will find the seven seals. You will find the seven
trumpets. You will find the seven bowls of wrath.
The seven seals give us a picture of a world ruined by
man. The seven judgments tell us about a world ruled
by Satan. Then the seven bowls will tell us about a
world rescued by God.
We are coming to the seven trumpets. In verse 1 when
the angel opens the seventh seal-out of that seventh
seal there will now tumble the seven trumpet
judgments. But I want you to notice, preliminarily, in
verse 1 when the seventh seal is opened we have the
most unusual event ever recorded in Scripture about
heaven. It says that there was silence in heaven about
the space of half an hour. Normally, when you read
about heaven you read about a place of singing and
praise and rejoicing. Now, there is silence in heaven.
The choirs are still. The harps cease. The angels are
not singing. There is silence in heaven.
It reminds us somewhat of what we find in the Old
Testament in the temple ritual. When the people of God
in the Old Testament would gather in the temple, from
time to time, at certain parts of the liturgy and the
ceremony, there would be dramatic pauses in the
worship. There would be a period of silence. So what
we have here is a dramatic pause. It's as if there is
a lull in the scene. It's as if someone said, "SSHH."
And there is a great silence all over heaven.
