How God Deals with Our Sin

1 John 2:1-2
1 John 2:1-2 (ESV) 1 My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. 2 He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.
Last week we looked at humanity's sin problem and why we need the Savior, Jesus Christ.
You'll remember that John has been talking with the church and reminding them of the very basic principles of having fellowship with God. John knows that this is so large that he wants to make sure this great message of hope is passed on to the church. because he knows from his own relationship and experience with Jesus that this whole thing of having the blessed fellowship with God is so important to every believer and for that reason he wants to pass along how a person comes to have this fellowship...he wants them to know also how they maintain that fellowship...and he wants them be perfectly clear on how important all this is.
So back in chapter 1, John started telling the people about how God is light and how there is no darkness whatsoever in Him and what that means...the reason that this basic truth is so important is that people will clutch at anything in order to excuse themselves of sin, or to excuse themselves to commit sin. This is why today, which was not really any different than in John's day...it's why today people will try to argue their excuses for sinning by using secular arguments such as being born that way, or they just can't help themselves because they were mistreated growing up, or because some psychologist or science person or theologian wrote a paper defending various behaviors that the Bible says is sin. Mankind simply grabs at anything that justifies any kind of sinful behavior.
