Don't Sin, but When (Not If) You Do...
Dr. Jerry Branch
1 John 2:1-2
1 John 2:1-2 (ESV)
1 My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. 2 He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.
Today, we are going to explore this passage, verses 1 and 2, and one of the first things that we will probably notice is that John addresses his audience as 'My Little Children.'
We touched on this earlier in this series...and we saw that THIS was not said as an insult...
but instead, it was John's way to warmly and lovingly address these folks...
and here's what I think is pretty neat also...through His Word right here, God's addressing us lovingly and warmly also as His Little Children.
''My Little Children.''
Such an EXPRESSION of a Father's deep love for His children...
I think that most dads all love their kids,
and their kids are held very near and dear in those daddies' hearts...
these kids are special...I know my kids are special to me...
and I'm sure your kids are very special to you too!
So as we look at this passage today, we need to keep in mind this special context of John's heart and God's heart towards these believers...
And this Also reminds us that John is writing this letter to the members of the local church...to the Christians...like we saw several weeks ago...
This letter is not just a general letter written to the general populace...
but it is written to a specific group of people...Christians...
And that means too again, this letter is written to us Christians today as well...
With that, let's again look at verse 1... My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin
God is once again speaking to us...to instruct us...
This is really the reason that John writes, ''I am writing these things to yo ...
