Being a Child of God
Dr. Jerry Branch
1 John 2:29-3:1
1 John 2:29-3:1 (ESV)
29 If you know that he is righteous, you may be sure that everyone who practices righteousness has been born of him. 1 See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him.
Looking at our passage, you notice that the thought which John is developing actually does not stop where the English Bible editors put the chapter markings, but actually goes into chapter 3.
As one commentator, John MacArthur, put it, 'the editors, ...may have served us better if they had not put a chapter heading between verse 29 and the next verse because I do think that there's one section here from verse 28 to verse 3,''...
That being said, regardless, John is continuing to state his basis for distinguishing between two groups of people...
You may recall from my message last week, that we saw that there were these two groups of people in the church...there were those who remained a part of the church, and those who had went out...so actually there was now only ONE group of people who were still IN the church...
but John was making a very distinct point of showing us what it was that determined whether a person remained, or departed...it wasn't because they liked the pastor or liked the music...
instead, we saw that in verse 20...this is where John was addressing the Christians, and stating what it was that made them different...
John said, ''but you have an anointing from the Holy One'' and not just in verse 20, but he said it again in verse 27 saying, ''the anointing which you received from Him abides in you...''
So John was talking about the Holy Spirit Who had come into and now abides in the Christian.
Again, then we are seeing that John said very clearly, that there were 2 groups...there were the Christians...this is because they had the Holy Spirit ...
