Acts 6:1-7

Mark Twain has said the only person who likes change is a wet baby.

Growth requires change. It is an axiom of life. Every new phase of life calls for adjustments to be made. Growth presents us with challenges. It has been true in our personal lives as we moved from infancy to childhood, from childhood to adolescence, from adolescence to young adulthood, from being single to being married, to being a single couple to being parents and then the phases of empty nesters, retirees and ultimately our golden years.

This simple statement of fact is also true for the church. If we are healthy and growing change will come, adjustments will have to be made and challenges will need to be met. This is not something that is new or unique to the modern day church. This was something the very first church discovered and we find her story recorded for us in the book of Acts.

It is out of the pains of growth that one of the great ministries of the church was born, the deacon ministry.

There was absolutely no doubt that God's hand was on this church. The supernatural power of God was at work in that place. Good things were happening. They were growing numerically and spiritually.

Growth, while a blessing, brings challenges and creates pain and discomfort. Growth also brings opposition. When God is at work in a church and through a church you can rest assured the enemy will mount an effort to stop it. Satan wanted to weaken the resolve of this new church and halt the progress of the Gospel so he begins mounting an attack.
