Fathers on Subject
Robert Dawson
Psalm 78:1-11
Three boys were bragging about whose dad was better. One little boy said, ''My daddy can talk for an hour on any subject.'' The second little boy, not to be out done, said, ''My dad can talk for two hours on any subject.'' The third little guy said, ''Aw, that's nothing. My dad can talk for three hours and doesn't even need a subject.''
It's Father's Day and we want to tell our dads, thank you and we love you. We appreciate all that you do for us. The sacrifices and investment you make in our families that often go unnoticed and the leadership you provide. I want you to be both encouraged and challenged today.
God has given us a very important and difficult job.
1. As fathers, we have been called to provide for and protect our family.
a. That is not easy and is often stressful. God has hard-wired that into our spiritual and emotional DNA.
b. It is a weight that husbands and fathers carry, one that drives us, in ways that our wives may not fully understand. (Sometimes we allow it to drive us in an unhealthy manner)
2. While protecting and providing are important parts of God's call for fathers they are not the sum-total of that calling.
a. We have also been called to be the spiritual leaders in our homes.
b. We are to provide a spiritual heritage as well as put food on the table, a roof over their heads and protection from anyone who would seek to harm them.
Our lives, what we say and what we do, should have a discernable message/subject. Our families and others should know that Jesus Christ is the great subject of our lives. We should strive to make Jesus the great subject and focus of our families.
It sounds easy...but it's not.
With the time we have this morning, I want to point us to some important truths and in doing so I hope we will be reminded...
1. What a great opportunity we have been given as husbands and fathers.
2. The only title we can hold greater than that of husb ...
