Hiding from God and Finding Forgiveness
Dr. Brian Fletcher
Genesis 3:1-21
The first three chapters of Genesis set the stage for the rest of the Bible. Genesis 1-3 explain to us, where we came from, what's wrong with the world, and how it will be fixed. The entire Bible tells us of this unfolding story of God's unbelievable love toward a stubborn and rebellious people (us). This book is not just a bunch of rules and regulations, it's not a religious encyclopedia, it's not a moral textbook, it's not an owner's manual, it's one big fat love story, where page after page after page the God of the universe who created you in His own image is wooing you back to himself, he is actively pursuing you to flood your life with mercy and grace. You have run away and ruined your life, you are now hiding in the bushes, shaking in your boots, hoping that God won't find you. But in reality, your only hope is for him to find you so He can show you all about who He really is and what lengths He has gone to bring you home.
Hiding from God (Sin and Shame)
In Gen 3 Adam and Eve sin against God and they immediately do two things. First, they cover themselves from their nakedness. Only moments ago, before they had sinned they were perfectly happy being naked but now they are ashamed. Second, they hide from God. But who are they kidding? You can't ''hide'' from God. Their hiding from God points to their feelings of guilt for what they did. The attempt to cover themselves reveals that they are ashamed for what they did.
Immediately Adam and Eve are thrown into chaos. They suddenly begin to feel the sting of what they have done against God. They no longer feel the safety and intimacy that they once had with God.
God had made it crystal clear, ''...of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.''
Adam and Eve were experiencing the conviction of knowing that what they did was wrong, they were experienc ...
