Imagine a society devoted to sensationalism, sensualism and pleasure, where hardly any sexual deviation is too extreme to be censored or forbidden. Imagine a society that is information driven, devoted to the transmission and endless analysis of events, ideas, philosophies and sports.Ray Stedman

What would it be like to live in a world like that? How challenging would it be for the church to minister in a culture like that? From a spiritual perspective, how difficult would it be to authentically, openly and uncompromisingly live out our faith in that kind of environment?

We don't have to strain our imaginations to answer that question. We don't even need to engage our imaginations in answering that question. We know what it is like to live in that kind of culture because we wake up to it every morning. That description fits our world, at least our part of it, perfectly but those words were not written to describe the day, age, country and culture in which we live. They were written to describe the culture in 1st century Corinth, not 21st century America.

Corinth was no an insignificant city. It boasted a large population, one that was well over ½ million. It was an important and strategic city.

1. It was located on a narrow isthmus, a 4-mile-wide land bridge, connecting lower Greece with upper Greece and the northern countries beyond.
2. Because of its seaports and ability to offload at one seaport and transport the cargo the four miles over land to another seaport, avoiding a dangerous and time consuming 250 mile journey sailing around the southern tip of Greece it became a very prosperous and busy city.
3. It was also a very immoral place. Vegan and New Orleans don't have a thing on Corinth. Corinth was a morally debased city. It was such an immoral city the people coined a term, using the name of the city, to describe a wicked and corrup ...
