A man was about to return home from a lengthy business trip and decided to pick up a gift for his wife. As he was browsing, a salesperson asked if she could be of some assistance. He explained that he was returning home after a very long business trip and wanted to bring home something special for his wife.

She suggested some perfume and produced a bottle with a sweet aroma, fancy name and expensive price tag. He asked, ''How much for that bottle?'' She replied, ''$150.00.'' The man, with a rather shocked look on his face, replied, ''That's a bit much!'' So, she disappeared and came back with another bottle. This one sporting a $125.00 price tag. The man's response was the same and this scene repeated itself until she brought out the smallest and most inexpensive bottle in stock. With an exasperated look, she held the bottle up and said, ''Here, this one is only $15.00'' He looked at her and said, ''Ma'am, what I mean is, I'd like to see something really cheap.'' The saleswoman reached underneath the cosmetic counter, handed the man a mirror and walked off.

A grasping hand and calculating heart are not the symbols of lavish love. A heart filled with love never looks to see how little it can give but how much it can give. Today, I want us to visit a beautiful scene of lavish love and extravagant worship. As we look in on this moment, I want us to feel a sense of awe. I also want us to feel, if necessary, the weight of conviction as well.

Before we dive into the Biblical text, I want to give you some context so you can understand where we are on the timeline of Jesus' life.

1. Jesus is going to Jerusalem for Passover. It was a very important day of celebration for the Jewish people. It was a most holy day. For them it would be a combination of what July 4th and Thanksgiving is to us.
