Jesus and the Children
Rex Yancey
Matthew 19:13-15
A bachelor wrote a book on rearing children. He entitled it the ten commandments of raising children. He got married and had one child. He changed his book title to ten suggestions for rearing children. He had a second child. He changed the title to helpful hints for rearing children.
One man took of poll of what children thought about death and dying. One said, ''When I die, I don't want to go to heaven because I want to be with all my friends.'' Another said, ''When you die you don't have to do homework in heaven unless your teacher is there, too.'' Another one said, ''I am not afraid to die, I'm a Boy Scout.'' Another said, ''When you die, God takes care of you like your mother did when you were alive-only God doesn't yell at you all the time.''
Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem. It was a difficult time for him. Theologians are trying to trap him on the issue of divorce. Jesus was tired and emotionally drained. This was not the time to entertain a group of children.
Matthew, Mark, and Luke all mention this occasion that is packed full of insight.
How do we deal with children about spiritual things? With wisdom and finesse. This text does not answer the question, ''When can a child believe?'' There is no chronological age set forth in the scriptures. However there are some principles.
1. PARENTS
Dads and Moms were there with their children. There were some of both. Many Moms were there with their children without their husbands.
Some of them brought their children to Jesus out of curiosity. Some of the parents wanted to see Jesus and used their children as an excuse. Some of these parents were there out of a sincere desire.
A. These parents had been to Jesus themselves.
Leadership means to go before. God desires the salvation of the whole family. If parents aren't serious about their relationship with Jesus it is unlikely that their children will be.
