Characteristics of the Gospel (3 of 17)
Series: Colossians

Colossians 1:3-8
Chris Tomlin has a wonderful praise hymn out and the words go like this...
What can take a dying man and raise him up to life again? What can heal a wounded soul? What can make us white as snow? What can fill the emptiness? What can mend our brokenness? What restores our faith in God? What reveals the Father's love? What can lead the wayward home? What can melt a heart of stone? What can free the guilty ones? What can save and overcome? Mighty, awesome, wonderful is the holy cross. Where the Lamb laid down His life to lift us from the fall mighty is the power of the cross.
It is the message of the cross that makes all the difference. It is the Gospel that makes a difference. The Gospel is the power of God in our life. It is the Gospel, the message of the cross that brings about a change in our life.
In the opening verses of Colossians Paul reminds us of the importance of the Gospel and ties it to the commendation that he gives the Colossians for being a people of:
1. Faith. Placed faith in Christ. Faith is noteworthy. Faith is active. Made a difference in their life.
2. Love. Love for all the saints. Faith family was melting pot of all types of people from all walks of life and was one that overcomes prejudices and barriers.
3. Hope. People who had a sure and settled conviction that when all is said and done the greatest days of blessing and the consummation of their salvation and God's plans would be exactly as He said. God's promises would all be fulfilled.
These three hallmarks of genuine Christianity are not natural to our lives...so how do they get there. The Gospel gives birth to these in our lives. The Gospel is foundational to our faith. The Gospel is foundational to who we are as believers.
In these 6 verses tonight I want us to see how the Gospel is described...
