Colossians 1:15-20
I know it may be hard to believe but I have never been one for small talk...I remember going through EE training at our church in NC, we were taught how to share our faith but and also how to properly handle a home visit. One of the acrostics used to help us walk through a visit was F.I.R.E. It was a conversation guide. We talked about family first, interest, religious background and then asked exploratory questions designed to get us into the gospel. Although I was genuine and interested with the first part of the visit, family and interests, I was always anxious to get to the Gospel. I mean after all that is why I was there to begin with.
I kind of feel like that is what was going through Paul's mind as he wrote this letter to the church in Colossae. I am not suggesting that Paul was disingenuous in his praise of the Colossians. I am not suggesting Paul was disingenuous in his prayer for the Colossians.
As we get into these verses, I just get the feeling that Paul was waiting for this moment. He went through the niceties of introduction but now he is ready to jump in. He was warming the engine, revving it up at the starting line but now he is off to the races and is going exactly where he wanted to...
If you remember, there was a reason Paul wrote this letter. There is always a reason behind a letter. Colossians - had not yet been overrun or completely deceived by false teaching - there was great potential for that to happen and the pressure was building.
1. New teachers had disparaged Christ. Not by removing him but demoting him. They wanted the Colossians to believe that Christ was just one piece in the process of salvation and ultimate spiritual enlightenment.
a. He is not sufficient for salvation.
b. He is not sufficient for the deeper spiritual life.
c. He is not God.
2. Because He is not sufficient there are other things you need.. ...
