Colossians 1:12-23
I think deep down everyone wants to be good at something. For others they have an intense desire to be the best at what they do, the best ever. It drives them. It motivates them. There is nothing wrong with wanting to be the best.
I remember being told when I was younger to always do your best, strive to be the best you can be and try to beat the best so you can be the best. I was also told that eventually someone would come along who is faster, smarter, and more talented, hit farther, hit with better average, throw better, field better or sing better.
There is an old saying in sports that goes something like this, 'records are made to be broken.' They are. The Olympics are fast approaching this year and like the previous Olympics and Olympics before that we will see Olympic records fall, World records fall and new champions wear gold, silver and bronze. While we may reach the pinnacle of success it doesn't last. It is like the old game 'King of the mountain.' It should be called 'King for a moment.' Our reign never lasts long. There is always someone else waiting for the right moment to claim our title or take our record.
No one stays at the top forever right? Wrong. Jesus Christ is always on top. Jesus Christ is always preeminent. Jesus Christ is always King. There is no one who can compare. There is no one who can compete. There is no one who can take his place.
Here is Colossians Paul wanted those to whom he wrote both past and present to know that Christ is sufficient and that Christ is supreme. Jesus is not some second rate deity that is a fuzzy image of the real deal. Jesus is all you need for salvation. Jesus is all you need for living out your faith.
This is one of the major themes in Colossians and Paul wastes little time in getting to it.
