Colossians 1:24-29
One year while we were at the men's conference part of the worship that evening involved an artist who was painting. During the course of a song the man began to paint and as you watched, you could see everything, he put colors here and color there - smeared it here and he smeared it there and the farther he went and the longer you watched you begin to see the image rounding into shape and then when he put the finishing touches on the painting it was a beautiful representation of the crucifixion of Christ.
As we progress through the opening verses of this letter to the Christians in Colossae it's kind of like watching that painting. Paul has been putting a lot of colors on the canvas but now Paul's appeal and purpose is really starting to take shape. He has laid some groundwork with the words of thanks and encouragement concerning their faith, the prayer that he offered on their behalf and his exaltation of Christ as Lord of creation, church and redemption. Now the plan comes into view...
He calls them to express loyalty and fidelity to the Gospel message that had been presented to them. To help drive this point home Paul, remember whom they did not know personally, gives them a glimpse into his ministry --- more than his ministry he gives them a glimpse into his heart and his passion.
More than just letting them look into his heart and revealing his passion, Paul who knew what the false teachers were like, set himself up and his ministry up against them so the people would understand what ministry is really about and looks like.
With all the different definitions that are out there today - all the different ideas out there concerning what ministry should look like - it will be good to remember what is at the heart of ministry and the minister regardless of what style or methods are in place --- they matter little if the core of what we do, why we ...
