Colossians 2:8-15
One of the things most of us have discovered in life is that it is easy to fool other people and if you are a touch naïve and gullible like I am, it is also easy to be fooled.
Dr. Donald Grey Barnhouse touches on this in a story he tells of a practical joke he and some friends pulled as teenagers on some unsuspecting pedestrians in a large city. He and his friends stood on the corner of a very busy intersection and stood looking into the sky, at nothing, one of them pointed while another one said 'It is not' while a third friend continued the argument by saying it is so - all of them doing it in such a way and with such volume so they could be heard.
At this point a couple of people who had just been passing by looked up in the same direction as the three friends straining to see what they could see. As the argument between the friends grew more heated people began to gather in hopes of figuring out what all the fuss was over and what in the world the boys were looking at. After a crowd gathered and chatter began within the group the boys quietly backed away to watch what would happen.
By this time some 15 people or so were looking into the air at nothing and talking about things that were not there. Twenty minutes went by and some were still standing and others had propped up against the wall still staring off in the distance looking for something that had never been there.
In reference to this little trick Barn house observed, 'That little incident is a good illustration of all the earth-born religions. People talk about having faith; they tell you to look in a direction where there is absolutely nothing. Some people are so desperately in need of seeing something that they will look till they are almost blind, yet they never catch a glimpse of anything real.'
