A Paralyzed Soul Made Whole
Robert Dawson
Luke 5:17-26
[PowerPoint of Egg that has the shadow of a chicken]
What you are seeing on the screen is ''eggsample'' of foreshadowing. Get it? ''Eggsample?'' Oh, never mind. Foreshadowing is a creative tool used by story-tellers to supply clues to let the audience or reader know what will happen later in the story. Sometimes the foreshadowing is subtle and can be easily missed. Other times is more apparent, like a flashing neon sign.
The first two sentences of the passage we are going to look at today are more of the neon sign variety. They tell us something dramatic is about to happen. Luke 5.17 tells us...
- A large crowd of people gathered to hear Him teach and hopefully see a miracle.
- Among crowd of people were Pharisees and teachers of the law from every village of Galilee, Judea and even from Jerusalem. These Pharisees and teachers of the law - even at this early stage - were not really interested in learning but evaluating and gathering evidence against Jesus to discredit and condemn Him - foreshadowing.
- We also find another clue, an important clue, in the very last part of verse 17 that tells us something dramatic and amazing is about to happen. Luke says, ''And the Lord's power to heal was in Him.'' Cue the dramatic music and adjust the lighting because something is about to happen - someone is going to be healed - a miracle is about to take place.
When you encounter Jesus' miracles in the Gospels we should remember, as we said a few weeks ago, that Jesus' miracles are parables in action. They are living stories meant to teach us spiritual truths. They illustrate what Jesus is able to do in the spiritual realm.
Let's look at the miracle and its surrounding story and discern the spiritual truths God has for us in this story.
Luke 5.17-26 (HCSB) - On one of those days while He was teaching, Pharisees and teachers of the law were sitting there who had come from every village of Galilee a ...
